The spirit of the Meiji era, for a global audience! Published on the 170th birth anniversary and the 110th death anniversary of Emperor Meiji, this collection of the Emperor’s poems has been painstakingly translated into English over half a century. The poems embody the essence of Meiji culture and are presented in Japanese and English side by side.
Throughout his lifetime, Emperor Meiji composed nearly 100,000 waka poems. Together with Meiji Tennoki [Biography of Emperor Meiji], they offer valuable insights about the Emperor and his life.
The translations are by Harold Wright, who came to Japan as a member of the U.S. Navy. After discovering the Man’yoshu poetry anthology, Wright pursued Japanese poetry studies and, at the recommendation of his mentor Donald Keene, was assigned to translate the waka of Emperor Meiji into English.
This book includes “Tale of a Translator,” a first-person account of Wright’s experience translating Japanese poetry and a beautiful example of postwar cultural exchange between Japan and the United States. The commentary was written by waka poet and cell biologist Nagata Kazuhiro.
